What a Year… And What is Coming Next?
By Bob Dougherty, Vice President of Business Development

If 2016 taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected. How else would you categorize a year when Brexit passed, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series, and the Pokémon Go phenomenon spurred new and “seasoned” enthusiasts into the hunt.

With all of the unexpected developments, the markets and our industry ended the year on a very strong note. After the election, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 5.4 percent—the best weekly performance in nearly five years. Meanwhile the mortgage market turned in a strong 2016, helped by an unexpected continuation of the refinance wave.

At year end, the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller HPI was nearing the peak set in 2006 before the market crash and unemployment was at its lowest level since 2007.

What will next year bring? The MBA is forecasting $1.10 trillion in purchase mortgage originations for 2017, an 11 percent increase from 2016 and the best year for purchase volume since 2007. On the half-empty side of the equation, most economists expect refinances to trend downward as interest rates rise.

In 2017, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) will increase the maximum baseline conforming loan limit purchased by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to $424,100 from $417,000 (the level set back in 2006). The New Year will also usher in a new administration with a new stance towards business and regulations, which most observers believe will be a net positive for banks and lenders.

How can you take advantage of these new opportunities? Begin by ensuring your company is ready to make the transition from a refi to a purchase environment. Is your sales team proactively building relationships with referral sources and advising first-time buyers? Does your consumer-direct channel offer informative tools such as rent versus own calculations to engage applicants who do their homework before applying for a mortgage loan? Finally, how efficient are your systems with loan file management across multiple branch operations?

As a Calyx® customer, you have the power to do all this with Calyx. If you haven’t yet used these tools, we are more than happy to show you. In 2017, we will continue to partner with you and select, high-quality vendors to provide the best solutions for your business.

Cheers to the end of 2016 and the start of 2017—may it be the best year yet!

In addition, the December Interface update has been completed. This update enables new functionality for Freddie Mac’s Loan Product Advisor (LPA), including:

  • The Property screen (under menu eLoanFile > Property) contains new fields in the “Appraisal and Valuation” section to cover more appraisal form types for LPA.  The new fields are supported in the LPA interface.
  • The “Doc File Identifier” field (from menu Banker > Shipping) is supported by the LPA interface.  This is the Appraisal Identifier from the UCDP system.
  • When viewing documents in Point (from menu Interfaces > Freddie Mac > Loan Product Advisor), the documents have the same appearance and layout as those on the LPA website.

The interface update occurs automatically for users with the latest Point version (Point 9.4, SP1) and an Internet connection.

If your computer does not perform the interface update automatically, you can initiate the update manually by using the following steps:

  • From the Help menu Select Check for Updates > Update Interfaces
  • Restart Point

Congratulations to 2016 HW Vanguard Awards Winner Ben Wu!

We are pleased to share the news that Ben Wu, Executive Director of LoanScorecard, a subsidiary of Calyx Technology,  was named one of 2016’s HW Vanguard Awards™ winners. Wu is a founding member of CalyxSoftware and was instrumental in the conception and creation of many Calyx core products, including Point for Windows and PointCentral.

The second annual HW Vanguard Awards list recognizes 40 housing industry leaders who have achieved success and impacted not only their individual organizations, but also the entire industry.

According to HousingWire:

"As the executive director at LoanScorecard, Ben Wu regularly works with clients to assess their current and future needs, helping them apply the latest technology to their credit decision process, to increase reach, mitigate risk, and broaden credit availability."

"Throughout the past year, as the non-agency market has made a comeback, Wu and his team at Irvine, California-based LoanScorecard have seen a great deal of success with Custom AUS, their non-agency automated underwriting engine…"

"Wu’s work within the industry as a leader moves the mortgage technology market forward because he doesn’t subscribe to the idea of ‘technology for technology’s sake.’ His goal is to develop technological solutions with a strong foundation that can be built on and last for years."
